Isle of Berneray - Peace and Tranquility on the Edge of the World

The hustle and bustle of everyday life.......Up early, bed late, kids to school, work piling up, dishwasher needs emptied, TV always on. Sometimes you just need to get away from it all with a super relaxed holiday.

Imagine waking up every morning to the sound of waves lapping against the rocks at your front door. Imagine cuddling up every night to your very own peat burning stove. Imagine a place where your nearest neighbours are a friendly colony of seals. Imagine walking for miles on the most pure white, sandiest beaches with no one around for miles.

Time to stop imagining. Backhill Cottage on the remote Scottish island of Berneray can offer you all of that and more. Travel back in time in this beautifully renovated traditional Hebridean blackhouse for a truly relaxing break where you will feel like you are on the edge of the world.

Backhill Cottage is a delightful, well appointed property consisting of a large double bedroom, bathroom with shower, a fully fitted kitchen with dining and living area and an outhouse. It has been tastefully decorated with a modern feel but still retains many of it's traditional features.

The cottage itself is situated just off the main road that runs through Berneray and overlooks Bays Loch and the island's seal viewing point. Berneray is a small island with a population of only 138 and is sandwiched between the Isle of North Uist and the Isle of Harris in the Western Isles Hebridean cluster.

The cottage is a short walk from the harbour at Berneray where you can often catch fishing boats docking and see what fresh seafood they have on board for purchase. The Ardmaree Stores and Lobster Pot Tea Room is also nearby for provisions and excellent home baking. The island is not very big and you are able to walk a full 10 mile loop which takes in the stunning East and West beaches offering fabulous views of the surrounding Hebridean landscape and Atlantic Ocean.

West Beach - Isle of Berneray.

Berneray is easily accessed by car on the Skye (Uig) to North Uist (Lochmaddy) ferry crossing operated by Calmac and the island is linked to North Uist by a purpose built causeway. It also provides an excellent base to explore other areas of the Western Isles. Head back to North Uist over the causeway and visit the excellent Hebridean Smokehouse selling fabulous local smoked seafood. Alternatively, travel north onto Harris where you can experience the splendour of the beaches at Scarista and Luskentyre (below).

Like the rest of the Western Isles, Harris is rich in history and culture. Harris Tweed features prominently on the island and there are a number of impressive arts and craft galleries and coffee shops that are well worth visiting, none more so than Hebrides Art on the west coast of the island near Luskentyre.

Berneray is a magical place that really will take you away from it all and Backhill Cottage is the perfect base to unwind, recharge and discover one of the most beautiful and tranquil places Scotland has to offer. Click here to find out more about booking this fabulous property.
